Embracing the Rollercoaster of Self-Reflection

Happy New Year! – As the fireworks dazzle the night sky and resolutions are set, there’s an undeniable thrill in the air—a promise of a new beginning, a fresh start. “New Year, New You” echoes everywhere, inspiring many to step up and embrace the possibilities the coming year holds. However, let’s acknowledge that for some, the transition isn’t always a smooth ride.

Enter the #NewYearStruggles—those moments when self-doubt creeps in, the unknown becomes daunting, and the infamous imposter syndrome takes center stage. Not everyone begins the year with unbridled excitement; for some, it’s a real challenge to stay motivated and avoid feeling overwhelmed by the uncertainties the future may bring.

The Christmas and New Year downtime, a time for relaxation and rejuvenation, sometimes leaves individuals a bit too comfortable with the art of “doing nothing.” As the calendar turns, reflections on the failures of the past year can cast a shadow, making the prospect of planning seem insurmountable amid the sea of self-doubt and overwhelm.

Enter the Itty Bitty Shitty Committee—an internal dialogue that excels at making you feel like the odds are stacked against you. This inner voice echoes your darkest thoughts, urging you to give up. It’s a universal struggle, and many, including myself, have experienced it firsthand.

Meet my alter egos: BOGAN BEV, the procrastinator who craves downtime and permission to do nothing, and EMOTIONAL EMMA, the voice of self-doubt that relentlessly reminds me of my failures. We’re all human; we all grapple with self-doubt and triggers that impact our mental well-being.

For me, identifying BEV & EMMA is a crucial step. It helps me recognise when I’m neglecting my well-being tools and getting overwhelmed by things I cannot change. It nudges me to return to my Gratitude tools, reminding myself of the wonderful life I have.

You Got This!

If you resonate with these struggles, know that you’re not alone. It’s okay to have a down day or two. What matters most is having the mindset tools to lift yourself out of that mood. Remember, these thoughts are just a bump in the road; your journey has not ended. You got this!

5 things you can do to help with #NewYearStruggles:

1. Embrace Self-Compassion: Instead of succumbing to the itty bitty shitty committee, practice self-compassion. Understand that it’s okay to have moments of self-doubt and setbacks. Treat yourself with the kindness and understanding you would offer to a friend facing similar challenges.

2. Create a Gratitude Journal: Combat the negative thoughts by focusing on the positive aspects of your life. Start a gratitude journal where you jot down things you’re thankful for each day. This simple practice can shift your mindset and remind you of the wonderful elements in your life, helping to counterbalance the negativity.

3. Break Tasks Into Smaller Steps: Feeling overwhelmed by the prospect of planning and facing the unknown? Break down tasks into smaller, more manageable steps. This not only makes the workload seem less daunting but also provides a sense of accomplishment as you complete each step, boosting your confidence and motivation.

4. Establish Mindfulness Practices: Incorporate mindfulness into your daily routine. Whether it’s meditation, deep breathing exercises, or simply taking a moment to appreciate the present, mindfulness helps ground you in the now, reducing anxiety about the future. Regular practice can enhance your ability to navigate through self-doubt and overwhelming thoughts.

5. Connect with a Support System: You are not alone in these struggles. Reach out to friends, family, or a support group to share your feelings. Sometimes, expressing your concerns and hearing others’ perspectives can provide valuable insights and encouragement. Building a strong support system can help you navigate the challenges and remind you that you have a network to lean on during tough times.

Remember, these strategies are not quick fixes, but consistent application can contribute to a positive shift in your mindset. Take it one step at a time, and acknowledge your progress along the way. You’ve got this! #YouGotThis #SelfCare #MindfulnessJourney

As we navigate the rollercoaster of #NewYearStruggles, it’s important to recognise that the journey toward self-improvement is rarely a straight and effortless path. Embracing the ups and downs, acknowledging the Itty Bitty Shitty Committee, and understanding that self-doubt is a shared human experience can be liberating.

By incorporating these strategies into your daily life—embracing self-compassion, cultivating gratitude, breaking tasks into manageable steps, practicing mindfulness, and connecting with a support system—you empower yourself to confront the challenges with resilience and determination.

Remember, the road to personal growth is a marathon, not a sprint. Celebrate the small victories, be patient with yourself, and recognise that setbacks are not roadblocks but mere detours on your journey.

You are not alone in this, and the #NewYearStruggles are just a part of the transformative process.

So, as you face the uncertainties of the year ahead, carry the knowledge that you possess the tools to overcome these struggles. Take each day as it comes, embrace the quirks and nuances of your own journey, and always remember: You got this!
